Scalp Micro-Pigmentation/ Scar Revision
What is Scalp Micro-Pigmentation?
Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical procedure that uses specially designed pigment and needles to deposit micro amounts of pigment into the scalp skin to replicate the hair follicle. If you have hair loss or thinning of any kind, this procedure is for you. It can be done on areas of the scalp that have little to no hair to create the illusion of a shaved head, it can be used to conceal scars, or it can be done within thinning hair to give the illusion of thicker/fuller hair.
How many sessions are required?
Usually 3-4 sessions are required to achieve the desired look. The first session is used to colour match and to set the foundation. The second and third session is to add density and the fourth session is a touch -up session that is offered up to one year after the initial session.
What type of pigments are used?
The pigments and needles used in SMP are specially designed for this procedure. They are charcoal based and do not contain iron oxides so there is no risk of colour change over time. The pigment will soften after the initial procedure as your skin heals but it will simply be a softer version of you initial colour.
Is the procedure painful?
A topical anesthetic is used prior to the procedure to ensure the client is as comfortable as possible. Everyone's pain threshold is different but many clients report little to no pain during the procedure. Due to the equipment used and the layer of the skin that the pigment is embedded, the procedure is much less painful than a regular tattoo. It is common to experience some redness and tenderness after the procedure.
Is the procedure different for scars?
The procedure is the same for scars, however the pigment will fade faster in scar tissue, therefore that area may require an additional session to ensure the pigment remains embedded. Scars must be healed for 1 year prior to treatment.
How will my hairline shape be decided on?
We will consult with you to determine a suitable hairline. The placement and design of the hairline is also dependant on your face shape and position of the natural hairline. Several measurements are taken to ensure symmetry. You and the technician will agree on the hairline before the SMP procedure is started.
How long after the treatment can I wash my head?
It is recommended to wait a period of 3 days before washing your head after the treatment, to provide adequate healing time.
How long do I have to wait after laser treatments?
It is recommended to wait 2-4 weeks after laser treatments to provide adequate healing time.
How long do I have to wait after a hair transplant?
It is recommended to wait until your scalp is completely healed. This varies for clients. It is recommend to discuss the healing time with the physician or technician that completed your transplant. Transplant scars have to be healed for 1 year prior to being treated.
What if a wear a hair system?
It is recommended to have your hair system removed for a period of 1 week prior to treatment to allow the scalp skin to breathe.
Are the results permanent?
SMP treatments are permanent. It is important to note however, that proper aftercare is required to achieve optimal, long lasting results. All aftercare instructions are discussed during the procedure. If fading has occurred during the initial year, you are able to book a touch-up session at no additional charge.
What if my hair changes colour as I get older or I continue to lose my hair?
Hair changing colour does not affect the look of your SMP treatment as you get older. Generally, hair follicles stay dark in colour at the root even though the shaft of the hair changes colour.
The technicians in our clinic are trained to embed pigment into the hairline when doing the SMP procedure. This ensures that the procedure will still look natural even if you continue to lose your hair. If you do however require a touch-up we can easily accommodate.
Microblading
What is Microblading?
Microblading is a manual, semi-permanent procedure that deposits pigment into the first few layers of the skin. The strokes are designed to result in natural, defined brows.
Is the procedure painful?
A topical anesthetic is used before and during the procedure to ensure the client is as comfortable as possible.
Is the procedure safe?
Our clinic is fully certified by Alberta Health Services and we pride ourselves on providing an environment that exceeds standards for cleanliness and safety. Each service is performed using antiseptic techniques and with sterile, disposable needles. All surfaces are disinfected and all equipment is sanitized before each use.
What type of pigment is used?
The pigments used for microblading contain iron oxides, this means that they will fade over time. The pigments are organic and are approved by the FDA for cosmetic purposes.
How long does microblading last?
As the pigment is semi-permanent, it will fade over time. The pigment should last anywhere from 8 months to 1 year. This is dependant on a variety of factors including aftercare regime, sun exposure, colour of pigment used (darker colours tend to last longer) and skin type (oily skin tends to push the pigment out faster). Touch ups are recommend on a yearly basis to keep your brows looking great!
Do you make a effort to keep as much of my natural brow hairs as possible?
Yes, we want you to keep as much of your natural brow hair as possible. This procedure is designed to enhance the brows you already have and to fill in sparse areas. We will only pluck the hairs that are outside the agreed upon design to give you a clean shape.
Can I get botox if I get my eyebrows done?
Yes! It is recommended however, to wait two weeks after your botox appointment to get this procedure done or to get your brows done two weeks before your scheduled botox appointment.
Can I have my eyebrows microbladed if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
It is not recommended to get this procedure done while pregnant or breastfeeding.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
- if you have a shape in mind please bring photos with you.
- if you draw in your brows each day and would like us to match that then please come to your appointment with your eyebrows drawn the way you like them.
- please do not drink or take any blood thinning medication prior to your appointment.
What is the healing process, when will I see the final result?
For the first 3-4 days you will experience some redness and swelling, At this time the pigment will appear very dark, this is due to some scab formation. After the first week you will notice that the pigment is very light. The final result will be visible at the 2 week mark. At 4 weeks you will return for your touch-up session. At that time the technician will look at colour retention and make adjustments at that time. All aftercare instructions will be provided to you during your appointment. It is important to follow these instructions and apply sunscreen to the area daily to achieve optimal results.
